It’s a story we have actually heard before: a homeless man in Brazil gets sick and his loyal canine companions follow him to the hospital. This time, it was a man named Luiz. The man, who is homeless, had a stroke. Luckily, he was rushed to the Santa Casa Hospital in Cianorte, Brazil. He was homeless, but thanks to his doggy companions, he was never alone. Luiz was taken away by ambulance and all of the dogs he calls family chased after the vehicle for several miles. Once the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the dogs did too. In fact, they stayed outside and waited for Luiz.
Hospital staff was worried about the dog’s welfare, so they contacted a local group called Amigos de Patas Cianorte, that helps care for animals in Brazil. The volunteers were on site to feed the dogs and make sure they were healthy. The dogs were doing well and they spent all day and night waiting outside for Luiz. All six dogs are a common sight for people who reside in the area, as their owner Luiz has lived on the streets there for twenty years. Over the years, people have tried to find Luiz a home, but he prefers to live on the streets with his loyal dog companions.
He is so close to his dogs, in fact, that they all sat outside the hospital and cried and barked for him. The next morning, Luiz was doing better and was released to his brother. However, he did not leave out of the front entrance and was not reunited with his dogs. The dogs remained at the front of the hospital waiting, so Luiz came back to be with them again. The dogs were so excited to see him and to finally be back with their loving owner.
