A sweet dog named Kevin was surrendered to the Austin Animal Center recently. The shelter is very crowded, so Kevin, a four year old Lab mix, had to be moved out of his kennel. Instead, he spends his days in the office of the shelter. He was very well behaved, but things mysteriously began to go missing in the office. That’s when the staff realized that Kevin had a bit of a stealing problem. When someone in the office left their belongings unattended, Kevin would sneak over and choose an item to take back to his bed. As the day went on, Kevin had quite the impressive collection of items on his bed.
The staff says it all started a few weeks ago when the staff who share an office with Kevin noticed he was very interested in collecting “human items.” He’s stolen a variety of items, including a purse, loose change, and even a boxed sandwich that he took but did not eat. He likes to take the items, carry them to his bed and create a little pile of his treasures. Kevin is certainly not remorseful for his behavior, but the staff realized he was actually stealing items for a sweet reason.
The staff thinks Kevin takes the items because it makes him feel closer to the people he spends his time with each day. He only steals the items of people who have left the office, perhaps because he’s lonely. So, that’s why he might steal a shirt that smells like a friend who is not in the office. He never destroys the items, just collects them. After all he’s been through with his previous family, it’s possible Kevin just wants to hold onto the people in his life. Kevin is looking for his forever home and would love a home with other animal siblings to play with and he loves both cats and dogs. It’s possible his stealing habit may stop when he is adopted, but it may not!
