On the side of a very busy four lane highway was a dog. The German Shepherd was just standing there, as cars buzzed by at a high rate of speed. No one stopped to help or stopped, but one woman did: Ashli Garza. It wasn’t great timing; she was on her way to a work appointment in Mission, Texas and she was running late. But, she still stopped at the sight of the poor dog on the side of the road. She wasn’t sure if it would be possible to catch her because there are many strays in the area and most of them are skittish. Ashli was just going to take a photo of the dog and share in on a Facebook group, but when she opened the door the dog came right to her. That’s when she realized the dog was covered in mud and had a very heavy, rusty chain around her neck.
The chain was actually wrapped around her neck twice and luckily, it had not caused serious damage other than some skin irritation and rubbing on her skin. Ashli said the chain was so heavy she was not sure how the dog could even hold her head up. The dog was muddy and Ashli had her friend’s wedding dress in her car, but she needed to help the dog. So, she got her in the back of the car and tried to get the chain off her neck, but the chained weighed 20 pounds and she couldn’t get it off on her own.
Ashli drove the dog back to her apartment and she and a friend worked to get the chain off the dog’s neck. They were going to use bolt cutters but were able to slip it over her head. The dog is now in foster care and will be ready for a forever home soon—all thanks to Ashli who stopped to help a stray dog.
