There is no question that a little dog named Martha is very special. She is pretty unique, too. The little Chihuahua-Maltese mix Is missing most of the fur on her body but has a large tuft of white hair on her head. She has big brown eyes and a mouth that always looks like she’s smiling. But her fate was almost very different. She was brought into a very crowded high kill shelter in Australia and at 12 years old, it was believed no one would want her. Staff at the shelter planned to euthanize her, but luckily Pets Haven Animal Shelter stepped in to help.
Martha was pulled at just the right time and that’s when the magnitude of her issues were discovered. It seems the missing fur on her body was the least of her issues; she had a condition called dry eye and a very severe murmur in her heart. She was also deaf. Martha needed some very time consuming and expensive treatment if she was going to survive, so the shelter said she was unadoptable. One of the vets treating her, a woman named Bianca Stockley, brought Martha home to sleep in a real bed. That’s when she fell in love with the little pup.
Bianca adopted Martha on the spot, and her health soon rebounded. She now is on medication to help her conditions and her fur is even starting to grow back again. Martha is part of a loving family and comes to work with her mom each day. She also loves to spend time with her doggy siblings, Fat Carlos and Daisy. Martha is particularly close with Carlos, who she sleeps with each night. Martha has come such a long way since she was taken in as a sick, hairless stray from the streets. She’s so lucky to have a new home and a new outlook on life!
