Calling a little pit bull named Sasha a “miracle” seems like quite the understatement. For a woman named Marie DeMarco, who is her foster mom, the little puppy has survived so much in her very short life. In fact, you could say that Sasha has beat all the odds to survive and even thrive in her life. From the moment she entered this world, there were some major hurdles facing the little pup. You see, Sasha was born with both a cleft lip and a cleft palate. This means that it was impossible for her to nurse from her mother and needed immediate intervention. Her owners reached out to a local group called the SNARR Animal Rescue Northeast in New York. This group specializes in helping dogs with special needs. They were just the group to help Sasha and hopefully save her life, too.
Sasha was in a very fragile state when she arrived, as she was unable to eat. This meant that tube feeding Sasha was the only option. Marie, who is a nurse practitioner who has worked with sick, injured kittens, was the perfect foster for little Sasha. The group warmed up some uncooked rice in a sock to keep Sasha warm and then transported her to Marie’s home. Sasha weighed just eleven ounces at the time. Once she was taken to a vet, it was determined that Sasha had other health problems, including hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain. He brain was just one third of the normal or average size. She has also developed a urinary tract infection, some orthopedic issues and even an upper respiratory infection.
Despite all she is facing, Sasha is still surviving and on her way to thriving. She only weighs one pound and nine ounces, so she is still too small for the surgeries she needs at this point. While the future is uncertain for the little pup, one thing is for sure: she is very loved by her foster family.
