When a young boy was playing in his Washington, D.C. backyard, he spotted a small rodent running underneath a fence and heading straight for him. Terrified, he jumped onto a fence to get away, only to realize it was not a rat. It was a tiny puppy. The little pup, who was later named Pumpkin, was so malnourished that it is believed she did not have much time left. So, the boy and his family began to reach out to others to help the puppy. One such person was Alicia Mathis, who knew the second she saw Pumpkin that she and her husband had to meet her and help her.
When they met Pumpkin, they could not believe their eyes: she was very small. She was the size of a rat, as it was assumed she was when she was first discovered. Once Pumpkin and Alicia met, it was love at first sight: the puppy burrowed into her lap and fell asleep. After they took her home, they knew it was important to get help for Pumpkin, because she was very sick. A visit to the veterinarian revealed that Pumpkin was just 3.9 pounds, had several parasites, and was severely malnourished. She was found just in time: doctors say she wouldn’t have lasted another day on the streets.
Alicia’s other dog Laila was just what Pumpkin needed: gentle friendship and companionship to help her get stronger. Laila was a good stand in mom and friend to Pumpkin, who was likely taken away from her mother and littermates far too soon. It didn’t take much time for Pumpkin to begin to thrive and grow bigger and stronger as the weeks and months went by. Pumpkin, who is a pit bull is thriving and growing these days and her owner Alicia even made an Instagram account for her to follow her antics!
