When he arrived at a Texas animal shelter, a dog named Blue was looking pretty rough. The four month old German Shepherd puppy was missing fur, incredibly skinny, and very scared. But luckily for both Blue and his sister, the Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue stepped in to help them. They rescued the pair, both Blue and his sister Roxanne, and were able to find them new homes in Virginia. Before they could make the journey across the country, they needed to be checked out by a veterinarian. That’s when it was discovered that little Blue had parvovirus. This deadly disease breaks down and ultimately destroys a dog’s intestinal lining and can be fatal if not treated. Blue was so sick that the team at Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue was unsure if he would survive.
Luckily, Blue’s sister Roxanne did not have parvovirus even though the pair had shared a kennel. So, she was transported to Virginia and placed in a foster home. Blue had to stay back for nearly a month as he completed treatment and once he got the all clear he also went to Virginia. A woman named Julia Downer volunteered to foster Blue. Once he arrived in her home, was so scared that he wouldn’t let anyone touch him or come near him. He found one spot in front of the dishwasher and refused to leave. If anyone came close, he ran in circles until they left. It was a heartbreaking scene.
But it was Julia’s two dogs who helped Blue the most. They played with him and Julia soon realized Blue just loved to chase a tennis ball. After a few weeks in her home, Blue really came out of his shell and began to jump on the bed for snuggles. While Julia wanted to keep Blue, someone stepped forward and she knew it was the perfect fit. These days, Blue goes on daily walks with his new owner and couldn’t be happier.
