A dog named Koncel had lost almost every piece of hair from her body. The ten year old dog was suffering and her owner did not know how to help her. Her owner, an Indonesian man named John, lived with his wife, mother in-law and daughter in a small village on the island of Sumatra. John worked on a local plantation and his dog Koncel came to work with him each day. But then Koncel got sick and she stopped eating and couldn’t come to work with John. Then all her fur began to fall out. John wanted to help, but did not have access to veterinary care for the dog. Someone even told John to put engine oil on her skin to heal it, but that did not help.
That’s when a group called Stay Wild stepped in to help. The group helps both domestic and wild animals in Sumatra and visited John’s village. He asked the group for help and they diagnosed Koncel with mange. Mange is caused by mites that burrow into a dog’s skin and Koncel just needed medication to be helped. She also had worms and fleas and was also treated for those. Two months later, Koncel looks and feels like a new dog. Her fur has grown back in, and she has the energy and vitality back that she lost while she was sick.
John says Koncel is back to the routine of joining him at work each day. She is also back to eating again and all her fur has grown back, too. It’s clear that John really loves his dog but simply did not have the means or access to medication to help her. Now that she is well again, the two are back to their routine and couldn’t be happier together once again!
