It was just like any other day at the Humane Society International (HSI) India, and the employees were busy. But during the hustle and bustle of the day, a stray dog wandered inside the lobby of the HIS. The dog then found a comfortable place to rest: the lobby couch. She curled up and promptly fell asleep and after a while, the staff realized she needed their help. The staff said she might have gone unnoticed, but the overwhelming stench from her body tipped them off; she had a terrible skin condition and needed help and she needed it quickly.
The stray dog had a terrible case of mange and her ears were bleeding. The dog, who staff named Fairy, was given water and food but became scared and ran away. The staff was upset they couldn’t help her, but she came back the same time the following day and the staff was ready to help. Fairy curled up on the couch again and they locked the front door so she couldn’t escape and again gave her food and water—and much needed veterinary care. Her mange was extreme and she had lost nearly all her hair except a small patch around her neck.
She was taken to a doctor and her skin was peeling from her body and was likely very painful, but she did not complain. She knew she was getting the help she desperately needed. The veterinarian confirmed she had mange and was given treatment to help ease her discomfort. Amazingly, that was her only health issue. Despite her past, Fairy was loving to everyone she met and let them care for her. It took six long months for her to heal, but she finally grew all her hair back and is now ready to find someone to adopt her into their home!
