Shelter Dog Loves Taking “Field Trips”

April Livingston | May 8th, 2018

Like so many other dogs out there, Gigi the pit bull found herself in the local shelter through no fault of her own. She arrived at the Fairfield County Animal Control and Adoption Center in South Carolina and immediately stole the hearts of everyone she met. In fact, it was Gigi’s big smile that endeared her to the volunteers at the Adoption Center. Each time someone entered the room, she smiled and was overcome with joy and excitement. Though she was found on the streets as a stray, it was clear she just loved people.

Gigi loves people and enjoys the attention from volunteers, but she soon grew very depressed. She would lie quietly in her kennel and wouldn’t even lift her head or move when a volunteer walked by or came to visit with her. Staff was so concerned by her behavior that they became worried she was sick, so they took her to a vet. It turns out she is completely healthy, she is just depressed at the shelter. After they realized how sad she was, the staff at the shelter decided something needed to be done to improve Gigi’s mood.

They decided to arrange a day on the town for her, as she just loves to be around people. The moment she got in the car, she began to smile and show excitement that had faded during her time at the shelter. They even stopped to get her ice cream, which she just loved. Gigi spent the entire day smiling and happy during her outing, which really helped to lift her spirits. The Adoption Center even posted the photos of Gigi’s “field trip” to social media, which helped to generate interest in her adoption. Though nothing is finalized, staff feel confident the outings will continue to lift Gigi’s spirits and she will find a loving home very soon.
