A dog named Cola arrived at the Yonkers Animal Shelter in New York in 2015. He was picked up from the street as a stray dog and sadly, he has lived at the shelter ever since. Even sadder, Cola the pit bull has grown accustomed to life in the animal shelter. He doesn’t pace in his enclosure or spin in circles like other dogs. Cola doesn’t bark or insist he’s the first one outside and instead calmly waits his turn. Though he’s used to being in the shelter environment, what he truly needs is a family to take him home and give him the love and attention he deserves.
Not much is known about Cola’s history, but he was neutered when he arrived at the shelter. That led staffers to believe he was someone’s pet but no one came forward to claim him. Cola is very laid back and sweet and beloved by shelter staff, so no one can figure out why he hasn’t been adopted by a family yet. Cola’s favorite things are being around people, playing outside and his very favorite thing is tennis balls. It’s not uncommon to see Cola with two tennis balls in his mouth and asking anyone he can find to throw them for him to chase. It’s believed the tennis call carrying is a comforting move for him, hopefully one he no longer needs when he has a real family.
Cola just loves to run after tennis balls outside, but he also loves to relax and nap too—making him the perfect companion. He’s loving, playful, and sweet: a perfect combination of attributes in a dog. Shelter staff is trying their hardest to find Cola a home, even creating his own Facebook page hoping that would bring attention to him. So far, it has not resulted in a successful adoption.
