The Fulton County Animal Shelter is a loud, scary place for the dogs who find themselves there. The kennels are very full and loud—many dogs are barking and don’t understand what happened to them. They are stuck in an unfamiliar place and many just don’t know what to do. One of those dogs, named Iris, is not a dog that barks and tries to draw attention to herself. She is one that wants nothing more than to just disappear and make herself invisible. She is in one of those loud, crowded kennels that has peeling paint on the walls from so many dogs that were in there before her.
She doesn’t know what to do, so she tries hiding. She sticks her nose and face into the corner and just lays there. Iris was found wandering the streets of Georgia and it’s believed she was homeless for years. Being in the noisy shelter has been so hard on Iris. Lucky for her, she and her sister, who is pregnant, caught the eye of a volunteer named Laurel-Ann Dooley. She needed to help sweet Iris before she was too far gone. So, she shared their story on Facebook hoping someone would step up to help.
She wrote about how terrified Iris is and how much she refuses to eat and just won’t leave the comfort of that corner. Luckily, Barkville Dog Rescue stepped in to help and now she is in a foster home. It took some time for her to adjust and at first she spent her time with her nose shoved in the corner of her crate. She is still very fearful but luckily she has a foster sister named Letty who is a golden retriever to help her navigate the world around her. With time and patience she will certainly be there in no time—and ready for her forever home!
