For a terrier mix named Summer, the streets were considered her home. She had been living on the streets of Los Angeles for quite a while. Many people in the area took care of her as best as they could, feeding her and watching out for her well-being. But she never had a real home. Then, the people who took care of her as she lived on the streets noticed her belly began to grow: she was pregnant with puppies. That was when they stepped in and called a rescue organization to give her the help she truly needed. Rescuers from Hope for Paws eventually found Summer tucked away in some bushes with all of her puppies and they stepped in.

Summer needed to be in a safe and clean environment with her puppies to ensure they would all survive. Just hours after she gave birth, rescuers were on the scene. She was taking good care of them, but was happy to see rescuers. She greeted them happily and allowed rescuers to pick up the puppies and take them from the bushes one by one. Summer would pop in and out of the bushes, making sure her puppies were safe. She was very trusting of her rescuers and allowed them to rescue each of her six puppies and Summer, too.

The puppies and Summer were taken straight to the veterinarian where they were all given a clean bill of health. Upon closer inspection, it was determined that Summer was a pure bred Berger Picard, an incredibly rare dog breed. It’s not clear why or how she found her way onto the streets, but it did not matter: she is safe now. She and all six of her puppies were transferred into foster care where they have thrived under the care of a loving family.
