No one really knows what the dog had been through before he arrived at the shelter. Whatever it was, it must have been a truly terrible experience. The dog’s story began a few weeks earlier, however. That is when rescuers found him tied to a tree in a dense patch of woods in the Dalton, Georgia area. He had a thick leather belt tied around his neck and a very heavy chain used for logging tied to a nearby tree. The dog was absolutely terrified, dirty, and starving. While no one knows for certain what happened to him, it was easy to assume it was awful.

After being rescued by the Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation (SNARR), he was then brought to the Whitfield County Animal Shelter. Sadly, he was so afraid and traumatized that he would not let anyone come near him. He did not even want to be touched, growling at anyone who tried and then hiding in the corner to put his face against the wall. He seemed to have given up. He was so scared that rescuers couldn’t even get close enough to remove the thick leather belt that was around his neck. Rather than traumatize him further, rescuers decided to give him some space for a few days so he could calm down.

But then something incredible happened: a woman named Rebecca Road took photos of him and posted them to Facebook. That’s when a local veterinary clinic took him in, and put him under anesthesia to neuter him and removed the belt from his neck. Once the belt was removed, it was like he was a new dog. He perked up, began to get close to people and even started to play and wag his tail! While he still has a ways to go before he is ready to be adopted, Stewart the dog is well on his way to a new life.
