Taking a vacation for most people involves relaxation and perhaps even purchasing a souvenir before heading home. For a woman named Rebecca Lynch had a different idea on her vacation with her husband in Savannah, Georgia. The couple decided to make an unplanned stop at a local shelter before they headed out. Rebecca knew Georgia had many high-kill rural shelters and she knew she couldn’t leave the state before helping out a dog in need. So, she went to the shelter and decided to adopt the neediest dog there. That’s where she met Lizzy, a young terrier mix who was on the list for euthanasia. Someone had dumped the pregnant dog at the shelter and she needed urgent help.
Not only was Lizzy pregnant, she also had a broken leg. The couple adopted her and bought her a comfortable bed so she could rest in the back of the car as they drove home to Florida. Rebecca sat in the back with Lizzy, petting her and comforting her as they drove. She was nervous, so the extra attention helped ease her anxiety. It’s possible they offered her too much comfort, because an hour into the drive she was clearly feeling comfortable and safe. She began panting and was very restless and they realized she was in labor!
In total, it took 20 minutes for Lizzy to give birth to a total of 6 puppies. They took her straight to the vet, where she and the puppies were given a clean bill of health. The family made it home to Florida and Lizzy and her pups are all doing well—they are all at the vet and the pups will be fostered in Rebecca’s home until they are ready to be adopted. Rebecca and her husband are so happy they made that stop at the shelter, saving Lizzy’s life and the life of her six sweet puppies.
