Puppy Returned to Shelter Over and Over Again

April Livingston | June 3rd, 2018

He had only been alive for seven months, but in that short period of time the little puppy had gone through so much. He had been in five different homes until finally finding himself at a local RSPCA for a sixth time. The individuals who returned him that last time said he was a very disobedient puppy. So, rescuers tried to see what was wrong. They began with a hearing test and realized his frustrated owners felt that way about him because he was actually deaf, not disobedient.

All along, no one realized the puppy was deaf, they just gave up on him one after the other. The puppy, who was named Ivor, began his new journey by learning something important: sign language. He was so smart that he picked up on it right away and he began to learn so much. It started with him learning to touch his nose to a hand, then he learned more basic commands, too. Now that rescuers knew how to help him, they placed him up for adoption. That’s where a woman named Ellie Bromilow found him, met him, and then fell in love with him and adopted him into her family. Shelter staff helped her learn sign language and she began to teach Ivor more signs.

Ivor soon mastered commands like come, sit, stay, lie down, all gone, and he’s well on his way to learning roll over. Ellie says Ivor is incredibly smart, and his sense of smell, sight, and touch are much sharper than the average dog. He loves to use his sharp nose to find treats around the house his mom has hidden, and go on adventures outside to explore the world. Better yet, he loves to take walks and then come back home for a nice nap and a snuggle.
