Puppy in Dumpster Gets Second Chance

April Livingston | January 2nd, 2019

On a very cold morning in Baltimore, Maryland a person walking past a dumpster heard an odd sound. It was a tiny little cry, coming from inside the trash dumpster. The individual looked inside the dumpster and couldn’t believe their eyes: there was something lying there on top of all the trash. It was a puppy, just five weeks old, who was cold, scared, and injured. So, the person rushed the little puppy to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) for help.

The little puppy’s face and head were swollen from the wounds and she had trouble opening her eyes. She also had some wounds on one of her legs. It seems the puppy had been attacked by another animal and then thrown away like trash by someone who didn’t care. Dana Hersl, who manages the BARCS emergency medical department, knew the little puppy needed constant care. So, Dana elected to foster the puppy in her home. Dana and her boyfriend immediately fell in love with the little puppy when she entered their home. The puppy’s face was so swollen, but she was still adorable. On their drive home with her a song by Hootie & the Blowfish came on the radio, so they named the puppy Hootie.

Hootie was found to have fractures in her skull, eye, and jaw from the attack. She wasn’t feeling well, but she was finally in good hands and receiving care and medication in a loving home. Hootie couldn’t even open her mouth, so she was hand fed pureed food. Hootie’s face improved with time and soon she was back to her playful puppy self, enjoying playing with toys and going for walks and even eating food on her own. These days, Hootie is running around and has a special bond with Dana’s son. She also loves her doggy siblings and is looking for a home with both dogs and children in it.
