Pregnant Dog Rescued from Shelter

April Livingston | November 3rd, 2018

The shelter can be a very scary experience for any dog. It’s a cold, confusing and often loud place for a dog who is confused by what brought them there in the first place. But an older, very pregnant dog might find it especially terrifying. That was the exact scene that a woman named Kathryn Sinske came across on Facebook recently. A chihuahua named Claire found herself in the shelter and she was listed as an older female dog who was going to give birth to a litter of puppies at any moment. She seemed confused and very scared in photos. Claire was picked up by animal control in San Bernardino, California and it was clear they found her just in time: her belly was very swollen.

Shelter staff placed her in isolation and gave her a blanket for her babies and she gave birth to a litter of four puppies. Sadly, one of the puppies did not survive. When Kathryn heard the puppies had arrived, she rushed to the shelter to save the mom and her pups. That’s when she realized little Claire had fleas and was filthy. She decided to take her and the puppies home, but first she had to sign a waiver because Claire had been listed as “fearful.”

Claire had some health issues too, spiking a fever of 105 degrees. Kathryn stepped in and hand fed both Claire and her puppies and they all survived. After all she had gone through, Claire deserved the comforts of home. She loves to sit in Kathryn’s lap and adores the affection and attention. Kathryn says Claire is a great mother to her puppies and they are growing and thriving in a home environment. Once they are old enough and get a clean bill of health, Claire and her puppies will all be available for adoption into a loving home.
