Pit Bull Saves Family from Fire

April Livingston | February 7th, 2018

Though he might look intimidating at first, anyone who knows Roscoe realizes what a sweet dog he is—all 85 pounds of him. Roscoe the pit bull terrier is a true lover; he enjoys snuggling with his family and giving kisses. Though he hasn’t always been known for his watchdog abilities, it turns out he is just that: and he saved the lives of his entire family in the process. Roscoe lives with the Lepert family in Parchment, Michigan. Recently, the family home caught fire in the middle of the night and when it happened, Roscoe knew just what to do.

Roscoe sleeps in bed with his owners, Kim and Brian Lepert. It isn’t uncommon for Roscoe to get up during the night and they typically tell him to go back to sleep. But one night, he kept whining. So, Brian got up with the dog and took him for a quick walk around 2:00 a.m. When the pair returned, Roscoe refused to leave the front door and kept whining without stopping. That’s when Brian realized something was wrong and began to smell smoke. He opened the basement door and saw flames on a table from a space heater that was left plugged into an extension cord. Thanks to Roscoe’s persistance and his nose, they were able to put out the fire before it was out of control or caused major damage to their home.

The family credits Roscoe for saving their lives. The fire and smoke alarms in the home began to go off 15 minutes after the fire was extinguished, but the family knew that time was of the essence when the fire began. It was Roscoe who warned them when the fire began and before it could spread throughout their home. The family says Roscoe is their hero and they could not be happier to have him in their lives!
