When a young pit bull was found wandering the streets in California, he landed in a local shelter. Things were not good for the dog; he was covered in both old scars and fresh wounds that were terribly infected. His head hung low, he was sad and very cautious around human beings. It was tough to blame him: it was clear he had escaped from a dog fighting ring. His most serious wound was to his lip, which had a large piece missing from fighting with another dog. His teeth were also worn down, likely from a stick used to break up fighting dogs. The shelter was not sure where he was from, but they new just who could help him: a local group call It’s the Pits Dog Rescue in San Diego.
The group immediately rescued the dog, who they named Triumph, to help him. It is believed he was used as a bait dog, which means he was attacked by other dogs in order to train them for dogfighting. Despite all he had been through, Triumph was a really sweet dog. In fact, he loved people and could not get enough belly rubs and affection from them. After he was rescued, Triumph also got the medical care he so desperately needed, particularly for his infected wounds. He was also quite thin and underweight, and he was put on a special diet to help him get back to a normal weight. Miraculously, his lip wound completely healed on its own, without a need for surgery.
After several weeks of treatment and healing, Triumph really came out of his shell. It became clear he was a loving dog who adored toys and going for long walks, too. But more than anything, he really loves being at home with his people, where he can snuggle and be held. Triumph is in foster care now, and hopes to find a new loving home soon!
