Overweight “Manatee Dog” Loses 80 Pounds

Losing weight can be tough. There is so much temptation around, what with fast food restaurants and delicious desserts around every corner. For humans, a healthy diet and consistent exercise plan is a good path to not only being healthy but also losing weight, should they choose to pursue that goal for themselves. Dogs, it seems, also sometimes find themselves in this precarious predicament. This is just the case for a poor little dog named Tyko.

Tyko the dog was seriously overweight. So much so, that this sweet dog could only take a few steps at a time. Any more exertion would cause the little dog to collapse and run out of breath. His rescuers reported that his well-meaning owner was slowing killing the pooch with “kindness” by overfeeding him and not giving him the proper exercise he needed. Tyko was taken in by the Scottish SPCA and since that time has lost an amazing 80 pounds from his small frame.

A woman by the name of Denise received Tyko, a corgi mix, as a gift from her husband. She was in charge of all his care and unfortunately did not feed him food appropriately and also did not seek out veterinary medical care for his health issues like a respiratory condition. A neighbor called the Scottish SPCA who took action to remove the dog from her home and also take him to the veterinarian for proper medical care. Tyko once weighed 108 pounds and is now down to his ideal weight for his size at 26 pounds.

His former owner is now facing legal charges, as Tyko experienced unnecessary suffering during his time under her care. She faces up to $25,000 in fines and a possibility of jail time or a ban from pet ownership if found guilty.

The good news? Tyko is now on the road to recovery thanks to the care of the Scottish SPCA and better yet he is now available for adoption!
