Obese Dog Too Big for Kennel

April Livingston | December 4th, 2018

When an individual who owned six dogs fell ill, they were no longer able to care for their dogs. So, they asked the Gables Farm Dogs & Cats Home in the UK to take them in. The shelter staff quickly agreed and began to make arrangements to care for all of the dogs. They were unsure about the condition of the dogs but couldn’t believe their eyes when one of the dogs arrived. It was an eleven-year-old Collie mix and it was the largest, most overweight dog they had ever seen before. Oddly enough, the shelter had taken in an obese dog just a few months earlier: a dog named Hattie the Fattie who weighed eighty pounds.

But this new dog, a collie mix they named Big Bopper the Whopper, weighed in at a staggering 110 pounds. For reference, a collie’s healthy weight should be around 50 to 60 pounds. No one knew how the dog became so large, but they knew they needed to step in and help him. As an older dog, all that extra weight meant stiff, sore joints and issues with walking. He also seemed quite depressed when he arrived at the shelter. To make matters worse, Bopper couldn’t fit in a standard sized kennel because he was too big. So, he got a special place to stay while he worked on his weight loss journey.

Though it took some time, Bopper is doing much better now and is finally eating again and happily going for short walks outside with shelter staff. He also is making friends at the shelter with his friends and is getting better each day. He still has some progress to make, as he still needs to lose about 50 pounds. While he might be struggling now, the staff is confident he’s moving in the right direction and will be back to his healthy, happy self soon!
