In South Texas, an animal shelter was incredibly overcrowded. It was a loud, chaotic environment for any animal, but it was particularly scary for a mother dog and her baby. The pair were terrified, and shaking with fear when discovered by a volunteer who was trying to help them. The baby hid her face behind her mom and the mom did her best to hide the baby. The woman visiting knew time was of the essence for the pair, who needed someone to step forward to adopt or foster the two dogs. As a bonded pair, that tends to be a difficult predicament.
When the photos of the mom and baby dog hit Facebook, that’s when Rescue Dogs Rock stepped in to help. The foster based rescue group in New York offered to do whatever they could to help. They shared the two dogs’ story online immediately, because the shelter they were in is known to be a high kill environment. They were scared and they needed help, it was that simple. That’s when a woman named Dava Hammack came across the post and realized it had been shared over one thousand times, but no one had stepped up to help.
Though Dava lives nine hours away and already had four rescue dogs of her own, she stepped in to help the mother and daughter duo. A group of volunteers offered to transport the two dogs to a meeting point. Dava and her daughter transported them the rest of the way home. The dogs, who they named Sadie and Benzy, had taken some time to adjust to their new life with dog and human siblings, but they have made great progress so far. They know that people and dogs are now here to help them and they are far from the scary shelter environment. Though no one knows where they will go next, they are now safe in their foster home.
