The woman driving in Odessa, Texas thought it was a big black garbage bag. Then, it moved. It wasn’t a bad, it was a dog—and she made her husband stop the car so she could stop to help. She called for him and he came running to her and she realized he was completely encased in dirty, matted fur. She didn’t know what to do, so she brought him to the West Texas Emergency Veterinary Clinic. Staff there say the dog was so matted with brown and black fur they couldn’t even see his face. It was guessed the dog was living on the streets for at least six months, maybe longer. Despite this, the dog was incredibly happy and friendly to everyone he met. He just wanted someone to pet him and hold him.
Before they could draw blood or take his temperature, they had to shave off his mats. The couple who found the dog, now named Matt, agreed to cover the costs of the dog’s care. Matt’s hair was so matted on his body that it took the staff days to painstakingly remove the hair from his body without hurting him. Matt was as sweet as could be throughout the ordeal, insisting upon sitting in the vet tech’s laps as he got his haircut.
In all, three pounds of fur were removed from Matt’s body. After he was given a haircut, the couple who found him said they could not take him. So, he was taken in by Rescuers Without Borders, a rescue group in Texas. While Matt is very friendly and loves people, it is believed he has never been inside a home before—he probably lived his entire life outside. So, his foster family is working with him on being a dog and understanding commands and potty training.
