It’s safe to say that a man named Mario Rodriguez really loves pit bulls. So much so, that he is willing to do just about anything to help them. So, when his wife found a sweet, smiling two year old pit bull he dropped everything. The dog in question, named Hickory, was on the euthanasia list at the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) so Mario knew he needed to act very quickly. There was just one small problem for Mario, who is a truck driver: he lives in California and Hickory was in New York. Approximately 2,800 miles stood between Hickory and Mario. So, he talked with his employers and they help him schedule a route on his truck that would take him to New York. He contacted the shelter to let them know he was coming and then he began his cross country journey to save Hickory.
Mario did not stop there, however. It took him several days to drive to New York and he called the shelter every day to make sure Hickory was still there and that staff knew he was still on his way to adopt the dog. It took six days total, but Mario finally made it to New York and he arrived at the Brooklyn ACC shelter. After all that time and all those miles, he was finally ready to meet Hickory in person. It was love at first site for both Mario and Hickory, who was so excited to meet his new dad.
After filling out the adoption paperwork, Mario and Hickory got back into the truck and headed to Mario’s home in Georgia. He got to meet his two doggy siblings and he immediately fit right in with his new dog and human family members. Hickory loves to travel with Mario and he has his own doggy bed in the truck where he sleeps as Mario drives his truck.
