Man Returns to Shelter to Rescue His Dog

April Livingston | March 17th, 2018

The animal shelter is full of dogs with a past. Many are dogs that are found wandering the street while still others were given up by their families for one reason or another. For a dog named Titus, the latter was true: his owner, a man named Lewis Jimenez had no choice but to give him up. Back in 2013, Lewis adopted Titus from the Austin Animal Center in Texas and while he was not planning to adopt a pit bull, he fell in love with the sweet caramel brown and white colored dog. For five years, Lewis and Titus were inseparable, but sadly all that changed recently. Lewis was told he had to give up Titus or he would be evicted from his apartment.

Lewis had nowhere else to go and could not find anyone to take care of Titus for him, so he sadly gave his dog back to the shelter. He told the staff he would be back for him, but the staff wasn’t so sure. They said it is very common for people to give up a dog and claim they will be back, only to never return again. That being said, the staff saw how difficult and emotional it was for Lewis to give up Titus. The experience was awful for Titus too; they said he was absolutely miserable in the shelter environment. The shelter tends to be a stressful, loud place for dogs and Titus struggled with being scared and anxious.

Titus perked up when the staff brought him outside to play, but spending time in his kennel was clearly very difficult for the dog. Lewis visited Titus often, if only for a few moments, because he missed him so much. Lewis and his family cried each time they had to leave their beloved dog. It was four long months that Titus stayed at the shelter, and then finally Lewis and his family found a place to live where Titus was welcome to stay. It was a truly joyous occasion when the pair was reunited and Lewis could finally take Titus back to where he belonged: home.
