Like so many other things these days, it all started on Twitter. A woman driving on the highway in Las Vegas saw something incredible, so she took out her phone and recorded a video and sent it to her daughter. The daughter, named Kaelyn, shared it on Twitter and it quickly went viral. The incredible video was of a man driving a motorcycle with an unusual companion: his husky Sox was his passenger. The dog had his paws on the man’s back and they were rolling down the road. The man wasn’t much for attention, but eventually he agreed to share his story.
Michael Fiala was the driver and his dog is a husky named Sox. Michael got Sox as a puppy and the pair has been together for eight years now. Michael needed to move to Hawaii and decided to sell his car, but kept his motorcycle. But he still needed to be able to bring Sox along on trips, so he began working with his dog to get him comfortable with the bike. It took time and lots of patience, but eventually Sox became on board quite literally. He first picked up Sox and placed him on the bike while it was off, then he would get him to jump on the bike. Eventually, he started the bike and would drive slowly to get him used to the sound and vibration.
Then, he really took to the experience and the pair traveled all over Hawaii together on rides and hikes exploring the area for six years. Michael had bigger goals, though: he wanted to visit all 50 states with his dog. For six months now, that’s what the pair have been doing. Michael has been documenting everything on his Instagram account, but that hasn’t been without criticism. Many people say he should have his dog taken away because it’s so dangerous. But Michael says they don’t know the full story, and so far he and Sox have traveled over 60,000 miles together.
