There is no question that a stray dog named Buboy is a very good and very loyal dog. For over two weeks, the dog sat patiently outside the office for faculty at the Mabalacat City College located in Pampanga, Philippines. He is often seen and heard scratching at the door and crying, hoping that his favorite human will come out and give him a treat, some food, or even a pat on the head. But what the dog did not know is that his human was not coming back. His presence was heartbreaking to the students and staff at the school, because they know what he didn’t: his person was gone.
That person was a professor at the school, a man named Carmelito Marcelo, who has been taking care of Buboy the dog for the last four years. The man had a stroke and passed away in the hospital after being there for a few weeks. The dog would follow the man everywhere he went, greeting him when he arrived in the morning and following him around the school, going from class to class together. Carmelito and Buboy even ate lunch together each day in the faculty office. Then, Carmelito would leave for the day and the dog would say goodbye at the gate. Even when he wasn’t teaching classes, Carmelito would come and visit his friend Buboy and feed him.
It was heartbreaking to watch Buboy, who patiently waited for Carmelito to come back but he never did. So, they helped him say goodbye: they brought him to Carmelito’s funeral so he could say goodbye to his friend. He put his paws on the coffin and sat patiently next to it and had to be forced to leave his friend’s side. The staff at the school say they are all coming together to care for Buboy in honor of their colleague Carmelito, because the school is his home.
