Lost “Badger” Not What He Seems

April Livingston | November 2nd, 2018

Facebook is a great way for people to connect, and often to help lost dogs become reunited with their owners. When a woman named Francesca Coatti was scrolling through her Facebook feed recently, she came across a truly odd post. Several people had spotted an animal with stubby legs and tan and black markings in Southern Colorado. Based on the photos and descriptions, no one was sure what the animal was: a dog or a badger. Even though the debate raged on, Francesca knew there was an animal in need of her help.

A group of volunteers from SoCO Paws Responders stepped in to help. The group monitored the area for five days and found paw prints, a burrow in the branches but couldn’t find the mystery animal anywhere. So, they placed a large metal trap in the area and filled it with food and treats. Just 12 hours later, they found the creature: it was an Australian shepherd mix. They were able to place a leash around the dog’s neck and transport her to safety. They named her Honey and took her to the veterinarian for an examination and vaccinations and she was then placed in a local foster home.

She is a very sweet and calm dog who loves nothing more than to play with her dog sister and foster parents. It’s unclear how Honey ended up in that dry riverbed, her teeth and some physical marks indicate she had a pretty tough life. Her teeth were very worn down for her age. When Honey was ready for adoption, there was a lot of interest in her. Her mom was the woman who sent an email saying she had lost her Aussie and knew Honey was meant for her; she was approved and drove two hours to pick up Honey. Honey is now settling in at her new home, where she can rest on a bed and never go hungry again.
