A gorgeous German shepherd was found wandering the streets of Georgia recently. Not only was she hungry and lost, but she was very pregnant. The dog, who was given the name Reba, needed help and she needed it quickly. She was just days away from giving birth to a litter of puppies. The good news for Reba is that the Heidi’s Legacy Dog Rescue in Florida found her and was able to transfer her to a loving foster home just in the nick of time. Kristy Anderson, who fosters for Heidi’s Legacy Dog Rescue said there was a large bust of a backyard breeder in the area at the time Reba was found. It’s possible she escaped the breeder during that bust, but no one knows for sure.
Once Reba arrived, they made her comfortable and kept a close watch on her and just two days later she gave bith. Reba went into labor and gave birth to six beautiful, healthy puppies not long after. One of the puppies looked different than the rest, though. The puppy was very rare: her light colored fur was actually green in color. They named the puppy Clover because it seemed fitting for her fur color. A puppy born with green fur is very rare, but not unheard of in the dog world. Doctors believe the green color is caused by amniotic fluid mixing with green bile in the mother’s womb.
Reba’s foster mom said she thought it was a sign of good luck and a great early St. Patrick’s Day gift as well. The green color isn’t permanent, however: after just 5 days the color faded and little Clover returned to her light colored coat. Clover looks just like her siblings now, who are all white with black spots and one of them is dark brown and black like its mother. Reba and her puppies are all doing well and will all soon be up for adoption!
