Grandmother Changes Mind About “Lapdogs”

April Livingston | March 14th, 2019

A man named Mike Flanagan brought a Rottweiler puppy home and it wasn’t the most popular decision with his mother-in-law. Peggy Allen, his mother-in-law, is 80 years old and quite small and while she loves dogs she prefers smaller breeds that are “lapdogs” over big dogs. When Peggy, who her family calls Grammy, heard the news about the puppy she said she has always preferred smaller lapdogs over bigger breeds like a Rottweiler. But Mike knew that even big dogs can have a positive effect on people, so he was optimistic that Grammy and the dog would become fast friends.

Grammy is picky about having her space and some peace and quiet, but their first meeting was surprisingly positive. But the two quickly got along and Grammy said Gus, the puppy, was okay to get on her lap as long as she invited him up first. But time quickly passed and Gus grew like crazy as puppies do, and in 9 months Gus weighed in at a whopping 100 pounds. In that time, Grammy’s life changed significantly: her husband passed away. It was like Gus knew, and he really tried to comfort Grammy in her difficult time. He never left her side during the visit, sleeping by her bed, waiting outside the bathroom for her, and howling with happiness when she returned home from being away.

Grammy the lapdog lover and Gus the large Rottweiler just had that special connection. Gus just loves people and snuggling, but he is up for adventures, too. He just seems to know what people need: cuddles with Grammy, snuggles with his human brother and even relieving his mom’s anxiety. Gus is just a great example of what dogs can do: offering comfort and love to everyone they meet. Though Grammy has always preferred small lapdogs, Gus has successfully changed her mind about big dogs.
