Emma Mertens is just seven years old, but she was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Though she was feeling quite down, there was one thing that could make her feel better and brighten her spirits. She knew that loves letters from dogs all over the world would help. It’s been just a month since her initial diagnosis and it was a shock to her entire family. Once Emma was told how sick she was there was only one thing she asked of her family: she wanted them to collect as many letters as possible. The letters would be from dogs all over the world, so that’s just what her family did.
Emma’s family began reaching out to everyone they knew, requesting letters and pictures from dog owners so Emma could “meet” their dogs. Her family was not sure if it would work or how many letters they would receive, but they were quickly inundated with letters and photos flooding their mailbox each day. There were so many letters, in fact, that the family created a P.O. box. Since the big announcement, her email account and P.O. box are full of letters and photos from dog owners hoping to brighten Emma’s day. It’s been incredible for Emma and her family to see, knowing how many people out there wanted to spread love to her.
In addition to the letters and emails, there has been a flood of photos and stories on Emma’s GoFundMe page. The page is full of dogs of all breeds and sizes and they are growing in numbers each and every day. Since she was a baby, Emma has been an animal and dog lover. The flood of letters and photos of dogs has help to raise Emma’s spirits as she goes through such a difficult time in her life.
