Should You Get Pet Insurance?

As any pet lover and dog owner will tell you, adding a pet to the family is a true blessing. Dogs are wonderful, loyal companions that will bring so much joy into your life. But as many people also know, animals can encounter health problems throughout their lives and particularly into their senior years. So, what do you do if your dog gets sick? You love your dog and want them to be healthy, but major vet bills can provide an incredible strain on you financially. This is why many people have chosen to get pet health insurance, but what does that mean and is it right for you? We have some things to consider to see if it is the right move for you and your family.

Much like insurance for humans, there are many options for pet health insurance today. There are a variety of plans out there that vary in price and coverage. The way most work is that the plan has a deductible and you are reimbursed for a portion of the costs after that deductible is met. Typically, you can visit any certified veterinarian while on these plans. Likewise, annual appointments are paid up front and then submitted to the company for partial reimbursement.

So, how much does pet insurance cost? Well, it depends! On average, a young and healthy dog could mean a monthly payment between $30 and $50 USD per month. The procedures and items covered under a pet insurance plan also varies widely, from covering just basic visits to more intense procedures and even injuries. These are all things to consider when deciding the right plan for you and your four legged friend.

The best way to determine the right thing for you and your dog is to do plenty of research and shop around to find the best policy to fit your budget and all of your needs. A healthy dog is a happy dog!
