A dog named King Zeus was feeling anything but regal at a recent adoption event. It was as though he knew deep down that he wasn’t going to a forever home that day. The six year old is a pit bull mix and he had been living at the Humane Society for Hamilton County, Indiana for several months. It was clear from the moment he arrived there that his life had been anything but easy. He had been living on the streets and it showed: his head and body are covered in scars. All those years of sleeping on the streets gave him pressure sores on his body and his teeth were worn down. He had never really known the love of a family or the warmth and comfort of a dog bed.
Despite his tough history, he was always open to affection and snuggling with every human he met. Sadly, Zeus had been adopted twice in the course of six months but was returned both times. While he is great with humans and children, Zeus is unable to live with other dogs. But that second time he returned to the shelter, the staff could tell his spirit was broken. He just lays quietly in his kennel watching as people pass him by time and time again. He doesn’t bark or draw attention to himself, it’s as though he knows no one is coming for him. So, the staff took Zeus to an adoption event at a local fairground.
That day, 299 dogs were adopted into loving homes. That is, every dog except for Zeus. It could be his breed or the scars all over his face or even the fact that he just lies in his crate quietly, but no one gave him a second look. The staff at the Humane Society for Hamilton County isn’t giving up on him though: you can fill out an application to adopt him on their website: http://www.hamiltonhumane.com/adopt/process-policies/adoption-process
