A man named Sam Coleman-Dancer works at a hardware store. He was at work recently and had an interaction that would make a huge impact on his life—and the life of a dog he never met. His story begins on a day like any other at the hardware store. Sam, who is a freshman in college, works at the Ace Hardware Store in Cleveland, Mississippi during his summer break. It’s common for him to greet customers and help them find the right tool for the job.
A man named Milton Lowe came into the store that day to buy something very specific: he needed a shovel. Sam asked Milton why he needed a shovel, as it was a very hot day in Mississippi and Sam realized the man was older. That is when Milton began to tell Sam about his dog. The dog, named Bo, had lived with Milton for twelve years and was a loving and loyal companion to him. Sadly, the dog had just passed away. Milton was grieving for the loss of his dog, but needed a shovel so that he could lay Bo to rest. The man told Sam all about Bo and their time together. He described how much the dog loved to play fetch and how they would go for long walks together. Bo was always there for Milton and the two had a special connection, so losing the dog was very emotional for him.
So, Sam told Milton he would like to come to his home after work to help him bury his dog Bo. The man was surprised by the offer and at first refused but Sam insisted and the man agreed. Sam finished his day of work and then headed to Milton’s house to help him. Though Sam never met Bo, he came to love the dog after hearing how important he was to Milton. Helping him lay the dog to rest was a great honor, said Sam.
