Dying Dog Gets Second Chance

April Livingston | January 28th, 2019

Courtney Thomsen was doing something recently that many people do: she was scrolling through her Facebook feed. Amongst the family photos and vacation pictures, something made her heart skip a beat: a sweet little fluffy face with the saddest eyes. Courtney is friends with a woman named Konnie who shared a post from the Humane Society of Southeast Texas. The post was heartbreaking: there was a dog in the shelter who was terminally ill and needed a special family to make the remainder of his life happy and comfortable. Courtney felt compelled to do something, though it probably would have been easier to just keep on scrolling.

She hated that this very sick little dog was all alone in the shelter and that he would potentially die alone. So, she picked up the phone and called the Humane Society even though it was a scary proposition. She did not know anything about the little sick dog, but she knew he was dumped at the shelter skinny and filthy. He had a laundry list of ailments and medications, but Courtney wanted to help him. So, she and her son visited the shelter and something clicked: her son thought his name should be Taco and the dog came running to him once he heard the name. Taco came home with them, but he was clearly a very nervous dog and he was hesitant to trust his new family.

Courtney was not deterred, though: she was ready to do whatever it took to help Taco out of his shell. She talked to him, cuddled him, and played with him every chance she got. A few days later, he began to smile and show excitement—and following her everywhere she went. Taco had no training (or potty training) but he quickly caught on by watching Courtney’s two other dogs. Taco has heartworm disease and it is very advanced, so no one knows how much time he has left. But one thing is for certain: he will be happy and loved for whatever time he has left on Earth.
