Why Do Dogs Make Us Feel So Good?

As anyone who has owned (or even loved) a dog will tell you, dogs really make us feel great. But, what is the reason they bring such light and happiness to our lives? Is it their never ending loyalty, those beautiful eyes or a wagging tail? Well, according to researchers it goes much deeper than that. Studies have shown that being around a dog can have a positive impact on our overall health and well being as humans. In fact, dogs can help to decrease our stress levels, making us feel relaxed and able to approach life from a more positive perspective. According to one doctor, this has a major impact on our lives.

According to Dr. Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri, this bond has a lot to do with how dogs have evolved over time. Dogs were once wild animals, and even after they were domesticated, they still lived and worked outside. But, as we all know, they are now inside our homes—and our hearts, too. Many believe this bond between dog and human has gotten even closer as technology has evolved and infiltrated our lives. Ours is a low touch, high tech world, which truly makes a shared bond with dogs all the more important in our lives.

Striking a bond with dogs makes us feel good, plain and simple, says Dr. Johnson. Talking, touching, and even seeing our dogs releases “feel good” hormones in our body. Those feelings are not easily replaced by a smartphone or other technology devices. There’s just no replacement for a dog and the way in which their presence and love makes us feel. The companionship and love of a dog is second to none, and it turns out science backs the claim that we’ve all known for many years!
