In Romania, a group called Barking Mad Dog Rescue works to keep dogs safe. So, when the group was approached by a local city hall for help, they knew just what to do. They were told that several dogs were being kept in the yard of a local church and when the group arrived to assist, they could not believe their eyes. There were two volunteers who went out to help, and they found 18 dogs. All the dogs were very thin and were tied to poles with chains—many of them so short they could not lay down. Though they had been mistreated the dogs were still very friendly. Some of the dogs were so excited they began to ‘hug’ their rescuers.
It turns out that a priest at the church had good intentions. He rescued the 18 dogs from the streets but soon realized it was too much for him to handle and he struggled to care for them properly. The women asked if he was feeding the dogs and he said they were given food twice a week. The dogs were very thin, and in desperate need of attention and care. Though the shelter was full, their rescuers knew the dogs needed to find a new place to live.
All the dogs received food and water and then the rescuers began to assemble new animal enclosures so they dogs would have a place to stay at the shelter. They were able to remove the 6 neediest dogs from the church, with the promise they would return for the rest. Just 3 days later, they had the enclosures built and the dogs were ready to go to their new home. They are finally free from their chains and once they have received all their vaccinations and are neutered and spayed, all the dogs will be ready for adoption into a loving home.
