Why Do Dogs Only Eat When People are Around?

April Livingston | March 8th, 2018

As anyone who owns a dog will tell you, most pooches have their own unique quirks. But one thing that most all dogs have in common is their love of food. Whether it’s asking for a treat or giving you those sad puppy dog eyes for a bite of your meal, it is clear that dogs just love food. However, some dogs have a few quirks that center around eating their own food. Some dogs can be picky eaters or display odd behavior around their bowl of kibble. In fact, it is very common for some dogs to only eat their food when their human is in the room.

This is actually a very normal and common behavior in dogs. But it begs the question: Why do dogs only eat when their people are in the room? Well, there are a few possibilities around what is happening. Firstly, it could go back to their roots as wild animals. Though your dog has evolved since then, dogs are pack animals and like to enjoy their meals with others. They are social animals and simply put, they just don’t want to eat alone.

It’s also possible that your dog is so attached to you and associates your presence with food that they can’t stand to let you out of their sight. Or, they could just be too busy trying to “protect” you from a potential intruder outside. They would just rather look out the window or door than chow down, it seems.

Likewise, some dogs simply have anxiety around food and mealtimes. It could be separation anxiety or any kind of stress that makes them want you there at all times. Doctors recommend working to help your dog get over this type of anxiety by adding “extras” to their kibble like cheese or chopped chicken to make them want to chow down without you.

If you need further help, consider talking to a veterinarian.
