There are plenty of jokes that could be made about this headline, but there were a few scary moments for a family in North Carolina recently. All The Wizard of Oz jokes aside, one special pup is lucky to be alive today after a harrowing event that left his family in shock.
A twelve year old Australian shepherd who is a senior dog was outside during a major storm in Davie County, North Carolina recently. A major tornado hit the area and touched down in the area. The strong, overpowering winds from this particular storm were so powerful that they lifted the dog named Duke off of the ground he was standing on. The swirling winds picked him up off of the ground and carried him over one thousand feet away from his family’s home.
Duke’s owner, a man named Lewis Vannoy was terrified by the ordeal. Once the winds had died down and the twister stopped, he went searching for his beloved older dog. He finally discovered the dog across the street from his home, lying in a nearby pasture. Luckily for Duke and his owner, the dog survived his ordeal but he was in severe pain, was unable to walk, and was crying and a bit lethargic.
After a trip to the veterinarian, it was discovered that Duke had a damaged retina and also broke one of his legs in several places. The dog has since had several surgeries and is now expected to make a full and healthy recovery. Sadly, Duke’s owner got some bad news recently: his home is too damaged from the storm to be salvaged and must be rebuilt. But the family is all safe and sound, including Duke the dog, and is working now to recover fully from their harrowing experience with weather.
