A Labrador named Barney has no idea he is any different than other dogs. In fact, he’s quite a normal guy for his breed; he loves to go on walks, play outside, and meet new friends. Oh, and he just LOVES to eat. However, if you were to meet Barney the black lab in person, you could not help but notice he looks just a little different than the “average” dog of his breed. This is because he was born with canine dwarfism, which is a very rare genetic condition for dogs. Barney’s legs are much smaller than average, which causes them to buckle and bend under the weight of his body.
When Barney arrived at the Almost Home Dog Rescue in North Wales recently, his unique stature and way of walking caught the eye of a man named Dave Sutton. Sadly, Barney was surrendered to the rescue facility when he was five years old, really through no fault of his own. His former owners were moving to a smaller home and could not take him along. Barney was a bit overweight when he arrived at the facility and volunteers think it is due to his intense love for human foods. From the moment he came to the rescue, he captured the attention and hearts of everyone he met. He is always happy and smiling and just loves to be around both people and dogs alike.
Barney just does not realize he has a disability and he is energetic and happy nearly every moment of the day. It was this love and affection that caught the attention of a woman named Jane Hampton, who gravitated to the dog and then decided to adopt him. Barney now happily lives with Jane, who is working with him to drop some much needed weight after a veterinarian said he was “morbidly obese.” One step at a time!
