There are many areas of Puerto Rico that have been completed devastated by Hurricane Maria. One such area is a small island called Vieques, which is in bad shape after the storm. The town does not have electricity and there is very limited access to fresh water after many people have lost their homes. However, humans are not the only ones affected by the storm: many animals are facing a terrible fate in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Many residents are unable to care for their pets and the island’s stray dogs, cats, and wild horses are having issues with fresh water access. Enter the Vieques Humane Society and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

These organizations are doing everything in their power to help these animals. The local Vieques Humane Society does not have the resources to help all the animals, so they came up with a genius plan instead. They teamed up with a company called Barry Aviation to fly as many dogs and cats as possible to the United States to they can be cared for by rescue groups and hopefully be adopted into new homes. Recently, over 100 dogs and 18 cats were loaded onto a plane headed to Denver, Colorado. A group from the Dumb Friends League, a local animal rescue, was on hand to help. One of those dogs managed to find her way into everyone’s hearts along the way: a little female dog named Foxy.

During the flight, Foxy managed to escape from her kennel and wandered straight into the plane’s cockpit. Rather than placing her back in the kennel, they let her stay. She sat and watched calmly, so the copilot picked her up and placed her in his lap, which is where she stayed the remainder of the flight. Even after the plane landed, all she wanted was to be held and loved—which means she will make a perfection companion for someone when she’s put up for adoption!
