Sophie had been living on the streets for quite a while, but no one knows exactly how long. Based on her condition and her overall disposition, it was clearly for far too long. She was found in February on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico laying on top of a pile of rotten garbage. Sophie was resting on an old blanket when her rescuers arrived and she was in terrible condition. She had scars all over her body, her ears were covered in blood and her stomach was sagging from many years of giving birth to litters of puppies. The rescuers, from a group called The Mutt Scouts, were aghast at her condition when they found her; it was clear she had been used for many years and then just thrown away.
The group took her straight to a local animal hospital where veterinarians determined that she had been bred many times and was also used as a bait dog in dog fighting. Her scars and bloody ears were evidence that she had been repeatedly attacked by other dogs. Sophie, who was just five years old, was also infested with fleas and ticks. She was given plenty of help, through medicated baths, antibiotics and her wounds began to heal with time. Once she was feeling better, rescuers transported her to California in the United States.
It was there that she truly began to blossom and her love of people, despite all she had gone through, started to show. Although she really loves people, she is still a bit scared around her fellow dogs which is understandable based on her traumatic past. Sophie has a lot of work to do and is currently working with a trainer and behaviorist to work on her severe anxiety around other dogs. Once she completes her training, she will be ready for a new home!
