A yellow Labrador was a common fixture for a person who had a delivery route in the area. He was just another stray dog in need of help, but soon people began to realize the sad story behind the dog’s presence in the area. The eight year old dog had a family once, and then they moved away and did not take him with them. The dog, whose name is Larry, had nowhere to go so he began living in the parking lot of a local landscaping company—across the street from his old home. He lived in the dirt, surviving because truckers would toss him food and give him water. But soon it became clear that his family was not coming back and so the delivery person created a social media account for him.
That account caught the attention of a woman named Sasha Abelson who runs the Love Leo Rescue group. Volunteers from the group went out to see Larry and were able to get him into a car and took him to Los Angeles, two hours away. It was then that they realized poor Larry had a bloated stomach, was missing patches of fur, and had difficulty walking. He was scared and sad, but he was still happy to see the humans who had rescued him. Larry went to the veterinarian, where it was determined he has Cushing’s disease. This means he has a benign tumor on his pituitary gland, making him uncomfortable and tired—and even a little grumpy.
His rescuers would not give up on him, though. They got him on the proper medication and it worked wonders. Larry’s belly began to shrink and his real personality emerged: he was sweet and calm and loved to be around other dogs. Because Larry is an older dog and has a medical issue that requires medication and expenses, he has had a difficult time finding a forever home. But he has not given up yet—and neither have his rescuers.
