As it turns out, an Australian terrier named Rusty is quite the adventurer. His home continent of Australia is fairly large, but that did not hold Rusty back from exploring it all by himself. One day, he escaped from his home and hitched a ride with a truck driver in his home town of Goondiwindi, Queensland. The driver took him over 1,500 kilometers (that’s 930 miles!) to the southern part of the continent. It is certainly a far cry from his home, where the three year old dog has lived since he was a puppy. He typically lives on the family’s property with two other dogs and even some tiny human siblings. His owner, Laura Scudamore says he has been known to explore the property from time to time, but never has he ventured so far away.
Rusty once escaped the family property and ran to the nearby highway, where he caught a ride approximately two hours away. He actually spent the weekend with a family, who then realized he needed to be returned home. So, when Rusty’s family took a vacation recently, he decided it was time for another adventure. He again headed to the nearby highway and caught a ride with a truck driver and snuggled up for the long drive.
When his family returned from vacation, they tried to track him down and then received a call from a woman who had found Rusty in Snowtown, South Australia. He was nearly 17 hours away from home and getting him back was going to be tough—and expensive. So, his family got creative. They posted on Facebook that Rusty needed a ride home and he was looking for help. A pet courier service called Jetpets reached out and offered to help him home. His family is thrilled that he is now back with them, and is making sure he never goes on quite a long adventure again.
