A group of teenagers were hanging out near a dead end road in their hometown recently. As they sat around talking, something emerged from the nearby woods. It was a strange creature that began wandering around them and they were not sure what to do. So, a few of them approached to get a closer look and realized it wasn’t a wild animal, it was a dog. The dog was completely covered in huge mats in its fur. The dog, whose name is now Benji, was almost unrecognizable as a dog when he was found. It was difficult for him to move because of the mats in his fur and he was terrified when the teens approached him. It seems someone had neglected Benji for quite some time.
The teens call the RSPCA to help and did their best to comfort Benji as they waited on rescuers. They wrapped him in shirts to keep him warm and played music to calm him. Rescuers say that kindness helped save Benji’s life, as he was in a terrible state. He was taken immediately to the Cromwell Veterinary Group, where staff said it was the worst case of neglect the they had ever seen. Benji was severely dehydrated so they began pushing IV fluids and kept him comfortable overnight and then the next day they began the task of shaving his fur.
The staff administered painkillers to keep Benji comfortable then began to cut his fur. They soon realized he was actually missing a leg due to the lack of circulation from the matting. It took the group over two hours to remove Benji’s fur, and when they were finished they couldn’t believe how tiny the dog really was under all that hair. They removed two pounds of fur from his body. When he woke up he was still nervous, but seemed relieved to be rid of all that fur. Benji is now in a foster home as he heals and the RSPCA is looking to prosecute his owner.
