Like so many people in the world, Sarge the dog wakes up early each day to head into work. He works alongside his mom, Jennifer Gibbs, at a company called All Phase in Littleton, Colorado. The eight year old dog, who is a shepherd mix, does not wear a suit to work but he is the picture of professionalism in the office. Jennifer is in charge of account payable and other general office duties, while Sarge is in charge of being a team mascot and improving office morale. You could say he’s the favorite member of the team, beloved by office visitors, delivery people, and even family members.
Sarge’s story begins years ago, where he was abandoned as a young puppy that could not be cared for by a breeder. Jennifer adopted him at just seven weeks old and the pair has been inseparable ever since. However, Sarge is not just a good boy and a good employee: his most important job is to help Jennifer. In 2015, she experienced a traumatic brain injury and broken back during a biking accident. Sarge works to help Jennifer with her symptoms from the experience, including pain, migraines, and even anxiety. Jennifer says Sarge is always there as a calming presence, but also helps her to stay active and get out of the house when she’s having a particularly bad day.
Sarge is also there to comfort her when she would rather just stay inside. While he might not completely understand why Jennifer is not feeling well, he is never there to judge her. He is simply there is place his head on her lap and offer calm and comfort when she needs it most. So, when the holidays rolled around the office staff knew Sarge deserved a bonus for his hard work this year. So, they gave him a “bone-us” of a card and a $50 PetSmart gift certificate for his fine performance. Sarge and Jennifer went straight to the store to load up on bully sticks and chewy treats so he could finish out the year with the things he loves most.
