A woman walking down the street in Beirut, Lebanon heard something unique recently: it was whimpering. The sound was actually coming from inside a white van parked on the street and when she looked inside she couldn’t believe her eyes. Inside the van was a Malinois dog and the dog just looked miserable. She wasn’t sure what to do, but she walked by the van each day and became increasingly worried when she realized the dog was living in the van. She believed the dog had been inside for at least a month, but it could have been longer.
Some witnesses say the dog was taken out of the van once a day, but it is not clear how long she had been inside. The woman contacted Animals Lebanon for help, and they contacted the Ministry of Agriculture who had the authority to remove the dog from the van. Because it is law in the area, the owner was given a chance to improve living conditions for the dog, which he agreed to do. However, four days later nothing had changed and the dog was still in the van. So, the dog was removed. It would be an understatement to say the dog was thrilled to be out of the van: she began running around and was so excited.
The Ministry of Agriculture is caring for the dog now, along with Animals Lebanon. Due to her time spent in the van, she has some behavioral issues due to all that pent up energy. The group is working to correct those issues and ensure she gets plenty of exercise so she isn’t so destructive. But the dog is free now and she can run around and enjoy her time out of the van and will never have to go back in again.
