A strange call came in to the police in San Antonio, Texas one day. Someone said they saw an animal struggling in the center of the road and needed help. When officers arrived, they could hardly believe their eyes: the animal was actually a dog. That dog was so neglected and covered in matted fur that they could not determine its gender or breed. The dog was rushed to the San Antonio Animal Care Services facility, where a medical team was ready to help. In order to remove the massive mats from the dog’s body he had to be sedated. Then the team got to work and in total removed six pounds of matted fur from the little dog’s body.
After all the mats were removed they found a cocker spaniel underneath. The male dog was guessed to be eight years of age and they posted his story on social media, where Rebecca Payne from Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin and San Antonio stepped in to help. They had never seen such a severe neglect case before. Under those mats the dog was very thin and they believe it’s because the mats prevented him from being able to open his mouth or chew his food. It’s believed those mats were on his body for years, causing him to have overgrown nails, malnourishment and even teeth in horrible condition. His teeth were so bad in fact, he had to have most of them pulled from his mouth.
Rebecca is fostering the dog, who she named Hamish, and he is thriving now. He’s gaining weight and finally knows what it’s like to be loved and appreciated by humans—and to be without all that extra matted fur on his body. He wears sweaters most days so he can stay warm, but he’s learning to get along with his fellow dogs as well. Despite all he’s been through, Hamish is a sweet dog who loves other dogs and humans and will be up for adoption very soon!
