A dog named Wilbur arrived at his foster home after being rescued by the One More Dog Rescue. He was absolutely terrified of everything when he got there. He was only 9 months old, but clearly had a rough start to life. His foster family worked tirelessly to teach him that the world was not a scary place. Through lots of love and patience, he began to slowly transform into a new dog. His foster family fell in love with him and eventually decided to make it official and adopt him. Kristin LaRoche, who is Wilbur’s mom, says he was completely shut down when he first arrived. She even had to carry him out of the shelter because was so upset.
He was nervous, but he was willing to trust his new family. These days, he is silly, happy, clumsy, and confident. When he first arrived at their home, Wilbur was even scared to go outside. Everything was frightening to him, including the birds chirping, the wind blowing, and just about anything that made a sound or moved. But once he realized he was loved and safe he began to really enjoy being outdoors. As luck would have it, he loves being outside just a bit too much. So much so, he has started up a bad habit of digging holes around the backyard. His mom was not happy about his new naughty habit until she realized why Wilbur was digging the holes. He wasn’t just digging holes for no particular reason, he was actually doing it so he could have a safe place to take a long nap.
One day Kristin walked past the back door and saw Wilbur fast asleep in one of the holes he dug. She couldn’t stop laughing at the sight; he was sitting upright but slumped over after he fell asleep. She went outside to make sure he was okay and actually startled him from his nap when she opened the door. He was a bit embarrassed his mom caught him both digging holes and sleeping in them, so he headed inside to apologize to her. But she wasn’t mad for long—who could be angry at a face like that?
